How does it work? You pledge whatever amount of money you are comfortable with and no, you don't have to pay anything right away. The pledge is just your promise to pay when there is a product to pay for.
A developer bids a price for the project. What the project is near completion you deposit the amount of money you pledged and when the majority of pledgers agree that the project is complete the developer gets paid. Then the code is released to the open source community for everyone to enjoy.
The idea is that while anyone one of us may not be able to pay for development on our own, as a community we can accomplish much more. Even if each person only pledges $10-$20 that adds up when you are talking about 100 people. Some people have already pledged $50 and $75 to the project. Help spread the word!
