There is really only one thing to say to all of you

THANK YOU :)

From all us here at GroupJive to all of you, may this season bring you joy, happiness and renewal as we move forward faithfully to the potential of 2008.

Without question, the real story of GroupJive in 2007 has been THE COMMUNITY :)

You have made GroupJive fun, have brought ideas, have suggested and pushed and hoped and complained and done all the things that cause the bits of software (and the people) that make up GroupJive to move forward.

This year you have made GroupJive your own. We feel this is your success and we thank you.

From all of us at GJ, have a wondeful holiday. See you here next year and until then...

Make it Great in 2008

At first I must say sorry to all. Murphy's law is really annoying. Currently everybody on the team (all three of us) have a lot of high priority things to do in our normal lives. So, we have not had much time for Groupjive.

However, today I want to upload the current build so you can check it out. There is also a new searchbot available. Install it as a mambot and your users will be able to get the results from GroupJive groups (title and description) when searching.

Ok, here is the download list:
Please make a backup before installing the packages!

Please test it and let us know what's needs to be patched. Thank you.

The Future of Community at GroupJive

(and how you can help)

An incredible ride!

That's the only way I know how to describe the last 5 months here at GroupJive. It only takes a little looking in the "rear view" mirror to see how far we've come and recall all the ground that has been covered.

The Finish Line is just a couple of turns down the track now. Although we are not at the last stretch yet, it is time to think about supporting the future and the Community at GroupJive.

In developing a community component GroupJive would like to write today about our own community. What we are thinking about today and what we may ask for to support the very people that come here relying on Open Source to achieve their goals. When we think about online communities, we generally first come to consider some basic questions:
  • what makes a community?
  • what sustains a community?
So how do these two questions that each of us (developers / designers / hobbyists etc... ) consider in our own projects.... apply here at GroupJive? Let's take a look at two "super vital" and "super fundamental" areas (Forums and Support):

The Forums

Forums are the life and living space of most communities in Joomla! Forums make a community. In this writers opinion, it is no co-incidence that BestOfJoomla's FireBoard component is the 3rd most downloaded component at JoomlaCode. We can ponder many things about this fact... but most of us recognize that communicating, talking, chatting about stuff, asking questions, helping with answers and all things social start with the ability for us to talk with one another. Talking helps make a community and because of the vital role that Forums play in talking it could be said that as long as Forums support a community and a community supports it's Forums, it is likely the community then has a platform on which to continue, to grow, and to progress. With us, we believe that the Forums at GroupJive belong to you and we encourage this idea. They are yours to populate, formulate, energize and grow. Not only this... but in addition: in a development community, if the community will manage it's forums, the developers are then more able to manage development "to the benefit of the community". This also "sustains a community" because the developers are then better utilized to provide for the communities needs.

The GroupJive Forums are an important part of the Future of Community at GroupJive and the life of GroupJive online because a self-sustaining forum environment set's free the developers to develop the component of it's community.

It's simple, if it's true in other communities it is also true at GroupJive.org . So starting today, and in the future, we need you in our Forums, we need your ideas in our Forums, we need your knowledge in our Forums and other users need your Support in our Forums. GroupJive needs a vital and supportive forum environment able to serve the needs of our Users. We believe our forums help "make our community. So, for the future, we ask you today to keep GroupJive and the Forums at GroupJive a vibrant, helpful and active environment that gives gifts to it's community through our shared knowledge, experience and abilities.

Support

The idea of support is very simple. I embody it in the phrase "helping one another" and at GroupJive we believe "support sustains a community".

Communities often thrive where a need exists and the community is somehow able to meet the need (or at least help with the need). The need people have is evident in most every type of community. From my own life, I can demonstrate some needs within my family: My boy needs support in learning. My parents need support in lifting heavy things in their yard. I need support in in understanding how to care for their needs and what decisions to make that best serve these precious people I love and care for. I gain an understanding of how best to support them by listening, by caring enough to help and by becoming willing to serve. Not only do I support their needs but in "helping one another" they support mine.

Online communities have shared interests too. These interests bring people together to "support needs" that are common to the community. At GroupJive, the need we define as being expressed by the community and ultimately provide for through development is, in a word... "community". People that come to GroupJive come here based on the need to provide community to other people online. Community is literally the need that GroupJive is designed to meet.

Because GroupJive is in two words "about Community" it is interesting to consider that Community is not only what GroupJive does but it's also what GroupJive "needs" to improve as a component ... and a big part of meeting that need today is achieved in your Support for the project.

Please consider that the Users here at GroupJive as well as the component and it's developers need support. Plainly spoken...."It is a good thing to consider the components needs as well as your own and to support them." Why??? because the one does "very much" serve the other. When you support the GroupJive component, you gain the benefit of the community Groups that it offers. After all, this is Open Source! Please let me demonstrate...

Joomla Community GroupJive Community
  • I want to build a community
  • I need my community to support Groups
  • I need the Groups to be able to share information
  • GroupJive builds communities
  • GroupJive provides Groups and therefore supports your online community effort
  • GroupJive supports the sharing of information in Bulletins, Events, Forums and Email all in the context of a single community Group.

Now... let's reverse that for a moment

GroupJive Community
Joomla Community
  • GroupJive builds communities
  • GroupJive supports Groups
  • GroupJive supports the sharing of information in Bulletins, Events, Forums and Emails
  • The community builds GroupJive
  • The Group is the community which Supports GroupJive,
  • Because of the sharing of information, GroupJive grows, improves, listens to it's community, and as a result is meaningful and applicable to the needs of the community

The component benefits and the community benefits because both are serving the other in their turn.

Apply this in your own communities and reflect on how this idea takes shape throughout your projects. The Future of Community at GroupJive truly does depend on you supporting the needs in the GroupJive community. Please consider serving them.

Where you can help today:

SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY IN THE FORUMS: Support in the forums in areas such as Installation, Troubleshooting, General Help and Language Specific Support is greatly needed. This act of generosity has a HUGE upside for users and (even though it takes your time) it also benefits you . The benefit I'm speaking of arrives primarily in this way... when the community provides support to itself, the developers are then free to develop and provide the community with a better component.

To anyone waiting on GroupJive to reach Stable status, I suggest to you there is a one to one ratio of lost days and lost features to every minute/hour/and day that a GroupJive core member must spend in the Forums, or in tracking down erroneous bugs, or in fixing installations that generally can be supported with simple pointers and good natured help by the community.

We believe in our community and we are thankful for it. Today and in the future, we are hoping that our community believes in us. Because we believe in the community so much we are asking the community at GroupJive to please begin to support itself. We are finding out more and more every day how much of a pleasure working with and knowing so many good people can be. But for GroupJive to continue to progress at a high level, we need to be focused primarily on "development". Please... share in this partnership with us and give us the opportunity to build for you the best possible community component in Joomla!.

Thank you.

Your personal contributions and support offer the GroupJive component greater potential in all that it does. Every minute/hour/and day that you can give... brings GroupJive that much closer to Stable releases, Joomla 1.5 compatibility and beyond. We are grateful and we hope to share all the best this community has to offer with you.

Until next time.... THANKS!
